In General
- relamping of all traffic lights to high-efficiency LEDs (light-emitting diodes)
- right-size vehicles and replace inefficient ones with hybrids
- purchased energy-efficient hybrid vehicles for its fleet, including an energy-efficient street sweeper
- piloted a project to retrofit 2 riding lawn mowers with catalytic converters. Based on emission reduction tests are plan to retrofit 4 additional mowers
- host educational events such as Sustainable Pickering Day and Earth Hour
-
as appliances, motors and pumps need to be replaced staff investigate the high efficiency or Energy Star options. For example, when a new chiller, used in arena ice making procedures was required for Delaney Arena, an energy-efficient chiller was selected
Recreation Complex
- upgraded HVAC systems
- lighting was replaced with energy efficient systems
- this facility is managed using a Computerized Energy Management System that controls temperatures and operating times
- replaced air handling unit (SF-13) at the Recreation Complex. The new unit is equipped with variable frequency drive that reduced energy consumption by 30%.
- upgraded the building automated control system at the Recreation Complex
- installed a green roof at the Recreation Complex which improved carbon balance and overall insulation
- undertook an Energy Audit ++ through the Association of Municipalities of Ontario and the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure as part of the Municipal Eco Challenge Fund
- replacing the Recreation Complex Air Handling Unit (SF-10 / SF-15)
- the squash courts were fitted with light motion sensors
Civic Complex
- upgraded HVAC systems with variable frequency drives, saving a total of 146,700 KW hrs of energy. Half of the air balance system was completed in making the variable air volume boxes more efficient.
- in 2007 Pickering completed an energy efficiency re-lamping of City Hall that will save almost $50,000 per year in energy costs and over 400 tonnes per year in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions
- this facility is managed using a Computerized Energy Management System that controls temperatures and operating times
- replaced the old backup boiler at the Civic Complex with a high efficiency condensing boiler
West Shore Community Centre
- upgraded HVAC systems
- integrated West Shore Community Centre into the overall energy system, thereby reducing gas consumption by 26%
- replaced the windows and blinds at West Shore Community Centre
- upgrade the building envelope
Whitevale Community Centre
- lighting was replaced with energy efficient systems
Claremont and Petticoat Creek Community Centres
- these facilities are managed using a Computerized Energy Management System that controls temperatures and operating times
East Shore Community Centre
- this facility is managed using a Computerized Energy Management System that controls temperatures and operating times
- upgrading the building envelope and installing a white roof
Greenwood Library
- inefficient furnace was replaced with a high efficiency furnace and the facility was changed from oil to gas
Dunbarton Pool
- upgraded the building envelope and installed new HVAC and dehumidification system
Don Beer Arena
All arenas
- retrofitted ice resurfacers with catalytic converters
