Message from the Chair
Created in 2006, Sustainable Pickering has come a long way in a short time. Already, we have been recognized across the Province as a leading-edge municipality when it comes to sustainability, and in 2008, we received the highest award for Sustainable Planning from the Canadian Federation of Municipalities. I am proud to be the Chair of this Committee, along with Councillor Jennifer O’Connell (Vice-Chair), Councillor David Pickles, and Mayor Dave Ryan (ex-officio).
We have introduced new, low-voltage LED lighting, high-efficiency heating and air-conditioning, retrofitted an ice re-surfacer with new technology exhaust systems to cut greenhouse gas emissions, and developed new elements of sustainability for builders such as rooftop gardens and permeable pavement − but the journey has only just begun.
Sustainability is a bold new way of thinking when it comes to how Pickering will grow into the future. It will take vision and it will take time for everyone to become familiar with the way in which even small changes can make a huge difference within our communities and for our global well-being. But the movement is growing quickly as evidenced by the phenomenal reception Earth Day and Earth Hour has received across our planet. Sprawl is yesterday’s bad news. Efficient, eco-friendly communities are the new norm where public gathering places, pedestrians, cyclists, and public transit will emerge as the winners. I encourage all Pickering residents to embrace this healthier way of living − not only for our children and grandchildren but, just as importantly, for those of us here and now. Doug Dickerson, City Councillor – Ward 2
