Draft scorecard to measure sustainability

What is a Sustainable Neighbourhood?

Sustainable neighbourhood planning seeks to achieve long-term socially, environmentally and economically viable communities through design principles such as:

  • Creating socially cohesive and diverse communities through a mix of housing types and employment opportunities
  • Promoting alternative transportation and energy
  • Promoting efficient use of resources
  • Locating residential areas close to recreational and commercial services with pedestrian and cycling connections

All new houses are not created equally. For example, a new home that receives the EnergyStar label is 30-40% more energy efficient than a house built to minimum Ontario building code standards. This translates into reduced energy costs for the home owner!
Cars are a major source of smog in urban areas. Driving less helps everyone’s health, particularly children, the elderly and people at risk of cardio-respiratory problems.
Communities can meet heating and cooling needs using a central system, known as 'district energy', that is more efficient and less costly than individual furnaces in each home.
