Introduction
The Partners for Climate Protection program is a community wide plan
to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Pickering and a foundational
program of the Sustainable Pickering vision. The Partners for Climate Protection program
is a partnership between the Federation of Canadian Municipalities
(FCM) and ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability.
Project
Elements
The initial project phase will be completed by mid-2006 and
includes:
-
Gathering community and municipal
operations greenhouse gas (GHG) emission data;
-
Establishing GHG reduction targets
from baseline emissions;
-
Developing an action plan
detailing how we are going to accomplish such reductions and in
what timeframe.
Phase II of the project will include
the implementation of the action plan and ongoing monitoring of GHG
emissions.
Community
Engagement
Engaging the support of citizens and community leaders at the
planning stage is critical for successful implementation. Five
working groups have been created to develop key actions and
initiatives in their specific area of focus. These working groups
engage citizens and community leaders from a cross section of
community life including residents, businesses, institutions,
community groups and municipal government:

A workshop was held in June 2005 to
inform community leaders about this project and ask volunteers to
form these working groups. These groups have been meeting regularly
since October 2005 to brainstorm and prioritize actions to reduce GHG emissions
in their area of focus.
Once a preliminary action plan has
been drafted, a public forum will be held in the spring of 2006 to
gather further public input.
