How sustainable is Pickering?

  • How clean is our air?

  • How much renewable energy do we produce?

  • How much of the food that we consume is produced locally?

In order to ensure that our community has a bright future, providing benefits over the long term, the City of Pickering is establishing benchmarking standards for sustainability in Pickering. Working with the residents, businesses and community groups, Benchmarking Sustainability is establishing where we want to be, deciding how we're going to get there and measuring our progress along the way.

Definitions

Benchmark:
A standard by which something can be objectively measured or judged.

Benchmarking:
An active process that sets standards for a particular activity or goal, identifies targets or interim steps required to meet the standards, and selects specific indicators or measures of progress along the way.

Often used in business, a company will use benchmarking to measure their performance against the highest standards that are achievable. This enables the company to develop plans for how to improve, how to achieve a higher goal. Most progressive companies treat it as a continuous process in which they evaluate their performance on a regular basis, e.g., annually.
